Blood Dance Pushes The boundries of Goth in Their Dark, Experimental New Album
Ask Goth DJs in any city across the world if they know Blood Dance, and chances are more than one will probably reply "yes." You might think a band with this level of exposure would have multiple album releases by now, but instead, they’ve built their reputation through singles, extensive touring, and word-of-mouth. This is a band that has steadily made its mark on the gothic scene without the typical industry machinery behind them. Blood Dance has earned respect through their compelling presence and their unique blend of gothic music.
"Since 2019, the band has gained recognition through viral video memes of bats dancing to their tracks," says lead guitarist Asanti. "It’s funny how something so random could help us find a bigger audience, but it really caught on and became part of the underground culture around our music." Along with a series of singles released by the legendary Bari-Bari of Mephisto Walz, Christian Death, and Scarlet's Remains, these releases quickly caught the attention of the gothic scene, further solidifying Blood Dance’s place in the community.
The Making of the Album
The guitars were recorded at Notsuoh Café in Mexico City, a location that holds deep personal significance for lead guitarist Asanti, who spent his teenage years frequenting the café. Notsuoh was not only a source of inspiration for him but also became the space where he could revisit the roots of his musical identity. Drums were recorded across three continents: in Nigeria, South Africa, and Poland, adding an international flair to the album’s rhythm section.
In true DIY spirit, a significant portion of the recording process took place in Blood Dance's own home studio, where we crafted the album with raw energy and passion.
The recording spaces were essential to us, as we believe that each location carries its own energy, spirits, and personal or cultural significance. These spaces became more than just studios—they became part of the creative process. We wanted to infuse the album with not just the sounds but also the energy and souls of these places.
Key sessions also took place in Fistup, La Colmena, Maquiladora, and RD Studios, each contributing to the unique texture and depth of the sound. The final mix and mastering were handled by two respected names in the industry—Franck Amendola, known for his work with Corpus Delicti, mastered the album in Nice, France, while Jerome Schmitt completed the mastering in London, ensuring the album’s sound is polished and ready for the global stage.
Album Themes and Tracks
This album is more than just a collection of songs; it's an exploration of dark, thought-provoking themes that resonate with both Gothic music fans and those who appreciate boundary-pushing creativity. Each track was crafted to offer something new, combining haunting melodies, powerful lyrics, and genre-blending soundscapes.
Track List:
Sacrament – A haunting exploration of desire, reaching the point of worship.
No Dignity – A deep dive into the psychological complexities of S&M, examining power dynamics and submission.
Walk the Night – A predatory anthem for vampires on the hunt, capturing the eerie thrill of the chase.
Baptism in Pain – Inspired by Darkwave, New Wave, and Death Rock, this track channels the raw and visceral energy of the Conquest of Mexico, while invoking the relentless warrior spirit of Native Peoples of the Americas.
Modern Life – A twisted mix of improv jazz and '90s-inspired alt rock, this track speaks to the corporate takeover of the internet and the empty materialism of modern society.
Compromise – A Caribbean-inspired track that blends Darkwave, Soca beats, and gothic rock, exploring the metaphor of the devil as we sell ourselves out in life.
13 Demons – An 11-minute track that delves into demonic possession and schizophrenic paranoia, a deep and unsettling exploration of the mind’s darker corners. We dare to make our own Bela Lugosi's Dead, In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, or even Free Bird with this track, pushing the limits of gothic rock and song structure. Written by Castel, it takes listeners on a wild, haunting journey, embracing the unrestrained spirit of musical experimentation.
Each track was carefully crafted to evoke deep emotions and challenge the listener’s perceptions of gothic music. The album blends diverse genres and influences while staying true to the essence of the Gothic Rock genre. Blood Dance isn’t just offering an album; they are creating an experience for those who are looking for something new in the dark music scene.
Not Your Cookie-Cutter Goth
This album is not your typical, cookie-cutter goth music. It's not constrained by genres or limited by the music of their predecessors. Blood Dance has crafted a collection of songs that any serious collector of gothic music should have in their collection.
